Alexa, Vava, and the Magic Chessboard
It was New Year’s Eve, and Alexa's house was filled with sparkling lights, the smell of cookies, and the sound of music. But in Alexa’s room, things weren’t so cheerful. Toys were scattered everywhere, her books were in a pile on the floor, and even her favorite doll was missing a shoe. Alexa’s husky, Vava, lay on her bed, wagging his tail.
• Look at this mess, Vava! – said Alexa.
Vava tilted his head.
• Maybe it’s time to clean up? Your mom said you should tidy your room – Vava barked softly, in a way only Alexa could understand.
• But cleaning is boring! – said Alexa, plopping onto the floor.
Just then, a soft shimmering light filled the room. Out of nowhere, a tiny, glowing chessboard appeared on Alexa’s messy table.
• What’s that? – asked Alexa, her eyes wide.
The chessboard sparkled and spoke in a gentle voice.
• I am the Magic Chessboard. If you solve my puzzles, I will grant you a New Year’s wish.
Alexa gasped.
• A wish? Anything I want? – she asked.
The chessboard twinkled.
• Yes, but only if you tidy your room first. I need space to show you the puzzles.
Alexa groaned, but Vava nudged her gently.
• Come on, Alexa. Let’s do it together! – he barked.
The First Challenge
Alexa picked up her toys and placed them in their box while Vava used his nose to push scattered socks into the laundry basket.
• This isn’t so bad, – Alexa said, smiling.
Once the room was tidy, the chessboard glowed brighter. Little pieces moved by themselves to set up a puzzle.
• Solve this: How can the white knight capture the black queen in one move? – the chessboard asked.
Alexa furrowed her brow, thinking hard. She moved the knight carefully and smiled when the chessboard lit up.
• Correct! – said the chessboard. – Now for the second challenge.
The Messy Kitchen
The chessboard floated off the table and into the kitchen, where dishes were piled high in the sink, and crumbs covered the counter.
• What’s this? – asked Alexa.
• The second challenge is to help your mom clean the kitchen – the chessboard said.
• But it’s not my mess! – Alexa protested.
Vava barked.
• Helping is what families do, Alexa. We’re a team!
Alexa sighed but agreed. She wiped the counters, while Vava carried a small sponge in his mouth to clean lower shelves. Soon, the kitchen sparkled as brightly as the chessboard.
• Well done, – said the chessboard. – Now, for the final puzzle.

The Lost Piece
The chessboard floated back to Alexa’s room and spun in the air. Suddenly, one of the chess pieces fell off and rolled under the bed.
• Oh no! My most important piece! – said the chessboard.
Alexa and Vava peeked under the bed, where dust bunnies hid in the shadows.
• It’s so dusty! – Alexa said.
Vava wagged his tail.
• Then we’d better clean here too!
Alexa grabbed a broom, and together they cleaned every corner under the bed. They found not only the chess piece but also the missing shoe for her doll.
• Look, Vava! I found it! – Alexa cheered.
The chessboard glowed brighter than ever.
The New Year’s Wish
The chessboard floated back to the table and arranged all its pieces perfectly.
• You have completed the challenges, Alexa. Now, make your New Year’s wish.
Alexa thought for a moment.
• I wish I could learn to play chess really well so I can teach my friends! – she said.
The chessboard sparkled and spun, sending little stars into the air.
• Your wish is granted. But remember, tidying up and helping your mom will always lead to magical moments, – it said before disappearing.
Midnight Fireworks
Alexa hugged Vava tightly as fireworks lit up the sky outside.
• We did it, Vava. The house is clean, and I learned something new! – she said.
Vava wagged his tail.
• And we’re ready for even more adventures next year!
As the clock struck midnight, Alexa felt proud. She had learned that helping, cleaning, and playing could all be magical in their own way.
The End.
